Target Information
ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter genes regulate the amount of dietary cholesterol retained in the body.
ABCG8, highly expressed in the liver and intestine, cooperates with ABCG5 to limit intestinal absorption and promote biliary excretion of sterols.
Mutations in this transporter can cause sterol accumulation and lead to atherosclerosis or sitosterolemia, a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by hyperabsorption of sterols and impaired biliary excretion.
