Target Information

The protein encoded by this gene is an enzymatic component of the tricarboxylic acid cycle (Krebs cycle) and catalyzes the formation of L-malate from fumarate.
It exists in both cytosolic and mitochondrial forms, differing only by translation start site. The mitochondrial form undergoes N-terminal processing to yield the same mature protein as the cytosolic form.
This enzyme functions as a homotetramer and mutations can cause fumarase deficiency leading to progressive encephalopathy.
