Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is an enzymatic component of the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, catalyzing the formation of L-malate from fumarate. It exists in both cytosolic and mitochondrial forms, differing by translation start site. The mitochondrial form undergoes N-terminal extension removal to match the cytosolic form. It is a homotetrameric enzyme similar to thermostable class II fumarases. Mutations in this gene can cause fumarase deficiency, leading to progressive encephalopathy.
