Target Information
The FH gene encodes an enzymatic component of the tricarboxylic acid (Krebs) cycle that catalyzes the conversion of fumarate to L-malate. It exists in both cytosolic and mitochondrial forms, differing in the translation start site. The mitochondrial form has an N-terminal extension that is cleaved upon import. FH functions as a homotetramer and is similar to thermostable class II fumarases. Mutations in this gene are associated with fumarase deficiency, leading to progressive encephalopathy.
