Target Information
Ki-67 is a nuclear protein expressed during various stages of the cell cycle, particularly in late G1, S, G2, and M phases. It contains a forkhead-associated (FHA) domain that mediates association with euchromatin at the perichromosomal layer, centromeric heterochromatin, and nucleolus. Ki-67 displays a cell cycle–dependent distribution: perinucleolar in G1, nuclear matrix in G2, and chromosomal during M phase. It serves as a proliferation marker since it is absent in G0 cells and increases from G1 through mitosis. Ki-67 antibodies are widely used to determine the growth fraction in neoplasms, with a strong correlation between low Ki-67 index and low-grade tumors. It is also routinely used as a neuronal marker for cell cycling and proliferation.
