Target Information
Ki-67 is a nuclear protein expressed during various stages of the cell cycle—particularly in late G1, S, G2, and M phases. It contains a forkhead-associated (FHA) domain that allows association with euchromatin at the perichromosomal layer, centromeric heterochromatin, and the nucleolus. Ki-67 shows cell cycle-dependent localization: perinucleolar expression at G1, nuclear matrix expression at G2, and chromosomal expression during M phase.
As a proliferation marker, Ki-67 is absent in G0 cells and increases from G1 through mitosis. Ki-67 antibodies are widely used to determine the growth fraction in neoplasms, showing strong correlation between low Ki-67 index and histologically low-grade tumors. It is routinely used as a neuronal marker of cell cycling and proliferation.
