Product Specific Information

MA1-048 detects CaM kinase II from rat and mouse tissues.
This antibody recognizes both phosphorylated and non-phosphorylated alpha subunit of CaM kinase II only and does not detect the ~60 kDa beta subunit in either phosphorylation state.

• Suitable for Western blot, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, and immunoprecipitation.
• Detects an ~50 kDa protein representing the alpha subunit of CaM kinase II by Western blot.
• In rat hippocampal cells, immunofluorescence staining shows intense labeling of cell somas and neuropil areas, with lightly stained nuclei.

The immunogen used for MA1-048 is partially purified rat CaM kinase II.

Target Information

CAMK2A (CaMKII alpha) is a serine/threonine kinase regulating various cellular functions such as neuronal processes, gene expression, carbohydrate metabolism, cytoskeletal dynamics, and calcium homeostasis.
Autophosphorylation at threonine 286 activates CAMK2A, enabling a transition from calmodulin-dependent to independent activity.

CaMKII is broadly expressed and implicated in:

• Cell cycle and transcription regulation
• Dendritic spine and synapse formation
• Neuronal plasticity
• Sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca²⁺ transport in skeletal muscle

In neurons, CaMKII plays a structural role in actin cytoskeleton reorganization during plasticity by binding and bundling actin filaments independently of its kinase activity.
