Target Information
TNF-alpha (Tumor Necrosis Factor alpha) is a multifunctional proinflammatory cytokine belonging to the TNF superfamily. It is mainly secreted by macrophages and binds to receptors TNFRSF1A/TNFR1 and TNFRSF1B/TNFBR. TNF-alpha regulates immune cells, cell proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, lipid metabolism, and coagulation. It exists as multimeric forms but shows a single 17 kDa band under non-reducing SDS-PAGE conditions. Knockout studies in mice suggest its neuroprotective function and tumor necrosis activity. TNF-alpha also plays roles in immune responses to bacterial, viral, parasitic, and fungal infections and is implicated in autoimmune diseases, insulin resistance, and cancer.
