Target Information
TNF alpha (Tumor Necrosis Factor alpha) is a multifunctional proinflammatory cytokine belonging to the TNF superfamily. It is mainly secreted by macrophages and binds to receptors TNFRSF1A/TNFR1 and TNFRSF1B/TNFBR. TNF alpha regulates immune cell activity, proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, lipid metabolism, and coagulation.
It exists as multimers (dimers, trimers, or pentamers) and appears as a single 17 kDa band under non-reducing SDS-PAGE conditions.
Knockout studies in mice suggest TNF alpha has neuroprotective roles and induces tumor necrosis in tumor-bearing mice. It also contributes to immune responses against bacterial, viral, parasitic, and fungal infections, and has been implicated in autoimmune diseases, insulin resistance, and cancer.
