Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the SMAD family, which includes proteins similar to the Drosophila gene mothers against decapentaplegic (Mad) and the C. elegans gene Sma.
SMAD proteins act as signal transducers and transcriptional modulators mediating multiple signaling pathways.
This protein mediates bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling, influencing cell growth, apoptosis, morphogenesis, development, and immune responses.
Upon BMP ligand binding, it is phosphorylated and forms a complex with SMAD4 for transcriptional regulation.
It is also targeted by SMAD-specific E3 ubiquitin ligases (SMURF1, SMURF2) for ubiquitination and degradation.
Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same protein have been observed.
