Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the SMAD family, which includes proteins similar to the Drosophila gene mothers against decapentaplegic (Mad) and the C. elegans gene Sma. SMAD proteins act as signal transducers and transcriptional modulators in multiple signaling pathways.
This protein mediates bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling, which regulates cell growth, apoptosis, morphogenesis, development, and immune responses. Upon BMP ligand binding, the protein is phosphorylated and activated by BMP receptor kinase, forming a complex with SMAD4 that regulates transcription.
It is targeted by SMAD-specific E3 ubiquitin ligases (SMURF1, SMURF2) for ubiquitination and proteasome-mediated degradation. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same protein have been observed.
