Target Information

The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the SMAD family, which includes proteins similar to the gene products of Drosophila mothers against decapentaplegic (Mad) and C. elegans Sma. SMAD proteins act as signal transducers and transcriptional modulators mediating multiple signaling pathways.

This protein mediates bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling, which regulates cell growth, apoptosis, morphogenesis, development, and immune responses. Upon BMP ligand binding, the protein is phosphorylated and activated by BMP receptor kinases, forming a complex with SMAD4 for transcriptional regulation. It is a target for SMAD-specific E3 ubiquitin ligases (SMURF1, SMURF2) and undergoes ubiquitination and proteasome-mediated degradation. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same protein have been observed.
