Target Information
Beta-catenin is an adherens junction (AJ) protein involved in cell-cell adhesion and epithelial layer maintenance. It interacts with E-cadherin and alpha-catenin, linking the adhesion complex to the actin cytoskeleton.
Beta-catenin also associates with signaling pathways such as Wnt/Wingless and tyrosine kinase signaling, influencing morphogenesis and cell proliferation.
It is expressed in various hair follicle and epithelial cells and has been implicated in several cancers, including colorectal, ovarian, and skin tumors.
In the nucleus, beta-catenin co-activates Lef/Tcf transcription factors, promoting transcription of genes like cyclin D and c-myc, which drive cell proliferation and tumorigenesis.
