Immunoglobulins (antibodies) are membrane-bound or secreted glycoproteins produced by B lymphocytes.
In humoral immunity, membrane-bound immunoglobulins act as receptors that trigger clonal expansion and differentiation into plasma cells upon antigen binding.
Secreted immunoglobulins mediate antigen elimination during the effector phase of humoral immunity.
Each immunoglobulin has two antigen-binding sites formed by the variable domains of heavy and light chains.
The variable domains undergo V-(D)-J rearrangement and somatic hypermutation for affinity maturation.
Ig alpha (IgA) is the major immunoglobulin class in body secretions.
