Target Information
Constant region of immunoglobulin heavy chains.
Immunoglobulins (antibodies) are membrane-bound or secreted glycoproteins produced by B lymphocytes. During humoral immunity, membrane-bound immunoglobulins act as receptors that, upon antigen binding, trigger clonal expansion and differentiation into plasma cells that secrete immunoglobulins.
Secreted immunoglobulins mediate the effector phase of humoral immunity, eliminating bound antigens. The antigen binding site is formed by the variable domains of one heavy and one light chain, giving each immunoglobulin two antigen binding sites with high affinity for specific antigens.
Variable domains are assembled via V-(D)-J rearrangement and undergo somatic hypermutation for affinity maturation. IgA is the major immunoglobulin class in body secretions.
