Target Information
Constant region of immunoglobulin heavy chains. Immunoglobulins, also known as antibodies, are membrane-bound or secreted glycoproteins produced by B lymphocytes.
In the recognition phase of humoral immunity, membrane-bound immunoglobulins serve as receptors which, upon binding of a specific antigen, trigger clonal expansion and differentiation of B lymphocytes into plasma cells that secrete immunoglobulins.
Secreted immunoglobulins mediate the effector phase of humoral immunity, resulting in elimination of bound antigens.
The antigen binding site is formed by the variable domain of one heavy chain and its associated light chain, giving each immunoglobulin two antigen binding sites with high affinity for a particular antigen.
Variable domains are assembled by V-(D)-J rearrangement and undergo somatic hypermutations for affinity maturation.
Ig alpha is the major immunoglobulin class in body secretions. [UniProt]
