This antibody detects SARS-CoV-2 Spike protein but does not cross-react with SARS-CoV or MERS-CoV spike proteins based on internal testing.
Target Information
SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2), also known as 2019-nCoV (2019 Novel Coronavirus), causes illnesses ranging from mild cold-like symptoms to severe respiratory distress and death.
The SARS-CoV-2 Spike Protein consists of two domains, S1 and S2, and serves as the main surface antigen of the virus. The glycosylated Spike protein, along with the nucleocapsid protein, can be detected in infected cell culture supernatants using antisera from SARS patients.
The S1 domain contains a receptor-binding domain (RBD) that specifically binds to angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), the receptor on target cells. Variations in Spike proteins across coronaviruses reflect their diversity and influence receptor interactions and fusion mechanisms.
