Target Information
MEF2C is a transcription activator that binds specifically to the MEF2 element present in regulatory regions of many muscle-specific genes. It controls cardiac morphogenesis and myogenesis and is involved in vascular development. MEF2C plays an essential role in hippocampal-dependent learning and memory by regulating synaptic transmission and neuronal development. It is crucial for megakaryocyte and platelet development, bone marrow B lymphopoiesis, and B-cell survival and proliferation. MEF2C also contributes to neurogenesis and cortical architecture development. Isoform 3 and 4, lacking the repressor domain, are more active than isoform 1 and 2.
