Target Information
Beta-2-microglobulin (B2M) is a 12–14 kDa protein that forms part of the MHC class I complex. It is expressed on various cell types, including lymphocytes, thymocytes, monocytes, granulocytes, platelets, endothelial, and epithelial cells, but absent on erythrocytes.
B2M is also found in free form in plasma and shares homology with immunoglobulin constant regions. It plays roles in antigen presentation, TCR signaling, and CD8+ T cell activation. The B2M gene is located on chromosome 15, and mutations can cause hypercatabolic hypoproteinemia.
Beta-2 microglobulin levels can serve as a renal function biomarker and prognostic marker for HIV infection.
