Target Information
DNA-binding protein SATB2 binds to DNA at the nuclear matrix- or scaffold-associated regions and recognizes the sugar-phosphate structure of double-stranded DNA.
SATB2 functions as a transcription factor controlling nuclear gene expression by binding to matrix attachment regions (MARs) and inducing chromatin-loop remodeling.
It acts as a docking site for chromatin remodeling enzymes by recruiting corepressors (HDACs) or coactivators (HATs) directly to promoters and enhancers.
SATB2 is crucial for initiating upper-layer neurons (UL1) specific genetic programs and repressing deep-layer neurons (DL) and UL2 genes, likely through modulation of BCL11B expression.
It serves as a repressor of Ctip2 and a regulatory determinant of corticocortical connections in the developing cerebral cortex.
Mutations in the SATB2 gene are associated with cleft palate isolated (CPI).
