Target Information

This gene encodes a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor, part of the ligand-gated ion channel superfamily responsible for fast synaptic signal transmission. These pentameric receptors bind acetylcholine, inducing conformational changes that open an ion-conducting channel across the plasma membrane. The CHRNA4 protein forms functional receptors with nAChR beta-2 or beta-4 subunits. Mutations in this gene are associated with nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy type 1, and certain polymorphisms may confer protection against nicotine addiction.
