Target Information

Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) is a proinflammatory cytokine expressed by monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. It is synthesized as a 31 kDa inactive pro-form in response to inflammatory stimuli and accumulates in the cytosol. Activation of inflammasomes leads to cleavage of pro-IL-1β into the active 17 kDa form via caspase-1 activation.
IL-1β lacks a classical signal peptide and is secreted through an alternate mechanism. It signals through IL-1RI and IL-1RII receptors, shared with IL-1α, and its activity is regulated by IL-1 Receptor Antagonist (IL-1RA).
IL-1β plays a key role in innate immunity by inducing other proinflammatory cytokines and initiating acute-phase responses. Elevated IL-1β levels are linked to chronic inflammatory conditions, and IL-1β neutralizing antibodies have potential therapeutic applications.
