Target Information

Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) is a proinflammatory cytokine expressed by monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. It is synthesized as a 31 kDa inactive pro-form that accumulates in the cytosol and is cleaved into an active 17 kDa form upon inflammasome activation. This process involves caspase-1, which mediates cleavage of pro-IL-1β. IL-1β lacks a classical signal peptide and is secreted through an alternative mechanism. It signals via IL-1RI and IL-1RII receptors, shared with IL-1α, and its activity can be inhibited by IL-1 Receptor Antagonist (IL-1RA). IL-1β plays a crucial role in innate immune defense by inducing other cytokines and acute-phase responses. Elevated IL-1β levels are associated with chronic inflammatory diseases, and neutralizing antibodies have potential therapeutic value.
