IL-1β는 세포질 내에서 31 kDa의 비활성 전구체 형태로 합성되며, inflammasome 활성화에 의해 17 kDa의 활성형으로 절단됩니다. 이 과정은 caspase-1 활성화와 연관되어 있으며, IL-1β는 전통적인 ER/Golgi 경로를 거치지 않고 caspase-1과 함께 비정형적인 메커니즘으로 분비됩니다.
