Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is a regulatory subunit of the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). AMPK is a heterotrimer consisting of an alpha catalytic subunit and non-catalytic beta and gamma subunits. It acts as an energy-sensing enzyme monitoring cellular energy status. Upon metabolic stress, AMPK is activated and phosphorylates key enzymes such as acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) and HMG-CoA reductase (HMGCR), regulating fatty acid and cholesterol biosynthesis. The gamma-3 subunit is dominantly expressed in skeletal muscle and may play a key role in energy metabolism regulation.
