Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is a regulatory subunit of the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). AMPK is a heterotrimer consisting of an alpha catalytic subunit and non-catalytic beta and gamma subunits. It functions as a key energy-sensing enzyme that monitors cellular energy status. Under metabolic stress, AMPK becomes activated and phosphorylates acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) and HMG-CoA reductase (HMGCR), enzymes critical for fatty acid and cholesterol biosynthesis. The gamma-3 subunit is predominantly expressed in skeletal muscle and may play an important role in regulating energy metabolism in this tissue.
