Target Information
Cholera toxin (CTX) is a protein complex secreted by Vibrio cholerae, the causative agent of cholera infection.
The alpha subunit consists of two chains (A1 and A2) linked by a disulfide bridge and activates adenylate cyclase in intestinal mucosal cells, increasing intracellular cAMP levels.
The beta subunit binds to GM1-ganglioside receptors, initiating toxin uptake and delivery of the alpha subunit into cells.
The holotoxin structure forms a pentameric ring of beta subunits surrounding the alpha subunit.
