Target Information
Cardiac Troponin I (TnI) is an integral inhibitory protein in cardiac muscle, forming a complex with troponin C (TnC) and troponin T (TnT). TnT binds to tropomyosin to form a troponin-tropomyosin complex, anchored by TnI binding to actin within muscle thin filaments. Calcium binding to TnC induces a structural change that releases TnI from actin, enabling myosin attachment and muscle contraction.
Measurement of blood TnI and TnT levels is a key diagnostic indicator of cardiac muscle damage, useful for differentiating angina from myocardial infarction. Cardiac Troponin I also inhibits angiogenesis in vivo and in vitro. Mutations in the TnI gene are associated with familial hypertrophic cardiomyopathy type 7 (CMH7) and familial restrictive cardiomyopathy (RCM).
