Background
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the keratin family. Keratins are intermediate filament proteins responsible for maintaining the structural integrity of epithelial cells and are subdivided into cytokeratins and hair keratins. Type I cytokeratins consist of acidic proteins arranged in heterotypic pairs. Unlike related family members, Cytokeratin 19 is the smallest known acidic cytokeratin and is not paired with a basic cytokeratin in epithelial cells. It is specifically expressed in the periderm, a transient superficial layer enveloping the developing epidermis. The type I cytokeratins are clustered in the chromosome region 17q12–q21.
