Background
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the highly conserved cyclin family, characterized by periodic expression during the cell cycle. Cyclins regulate CDK kinases and exhibit distinct expression and degradation patterns that coordinate mitotic events. Cyclin A is expressed in testis, brain, and leukemic cell lines, functioning mainly in the control of germline meiotic cell cycle. It binds to CDK2 and CDC2 kinases, providing distinct kinase activities in S and G2 phases. Additionally, Cyclin A interacts with key cell cycle regulators such as Rb family proteins, transcription factor E2F-1, and p21 family proteins.
