Background
This gene encodes one of the six subunits of type IV collagen, a major structural component of basement membranes. The COL4A6 gene is organized head-to-head with COL4A5, sharing a common promoter. Deletions extending from COL4A5 into COL4A6 can lead to diffuse leiomyomatosis associated with X-linked Alport syndrome. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms. (RefSeq, Dec 2013)
