Background
Tight junctions are one mode of cell-to-cell adhesion in epithelial or endothelial cell sheets, forming continuous seals around cells and serving as a barrier to prevent solutes and water from passing freely through the paracellular space. These junctions consist of continuous networking strands with complementary grooves in adjacent membranes.
The CLDN6 gene encodes a component of tight junction strands, belonging to the claudin family. The protein functions as an integral membrane protein and serves as one of the entry cofactors for hepatitis C virus. Gene methylation may be involved in esophageal tumorigenesis. This gene is located adjacent to CLDN9 on chromosome 16.
