Target Information
DNA-binding protein SATB2 binds to DNA at the nuclear matrix- or scaffold-associated regions. It recognizes the sugar-phosphate structure of double-stranded DNA and functions as a transcription factor controlling nuclear gene expression by binding to matrix attachment regions (MARs) and inducing chromatin-loop remodeling. SATB2 recruits chromatin remodeling enzymes such as HDACs and HATs to promoters and enhancers. It is essential for the initiation of upper-layer neuron-specific genetic programs and the repression of deep-layer neuronal genes, likely through modulation of BCL11B expression. SATB2 acts as a repressor of Ctip2 and plays a critical role in corticocortical connections in the developing cerebral cortex. Mutations in SATB2 are associated with cleft palate isolated (CPI).
