This gene encodes a trifunctional protein associated with the first three enzymatic activities in the six-step pyrimidine biosynthesis pathway:

• Carbamoylphosphate synthetase (CPS II)
• Aspartate transcarbamoylase
• Dihydroorotase

The protein is regulated by the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) cascade, linking MAPK activation to de novo pyrimidine biosynthesis.
