Target Information

Beta-catenin is an adherens junction (AJ) protein involved in cell-cell adhesion and epithelial layer maintenance. It interacts with E-cadherin and alpha-catenin to anchor the E-cadherin complex to the actin cytoskeleton. Beta-catenin also binds to complexes containing adenomatous polyposis coli protein and microtubules, participating in signaling pathways such as tyrosine kinases, phosphatases, and Wnt/Wingless.

Beta-catenin expression is found in several hair follicle cell types and epithelial cells. It plays a pathological role in pilomatrixoma, medulloblastoma, colorectal cancer, ovarian cancer, and other solid tumors. In the nucleus, beta-catenin co-activates Lef/Tcf transcription factors, stimulating genes like cyclin D and c-myc, which promote cell proliferation and tumorigenesis.
