Target Information

The protein encoded by this gene is an enzymatic component of the tricarboxylic acid (Krebs) cycle and catalyzes the formation of L-malate from fumarate. It exists in both cytosolic and mitochondrial forms, differing by the translation start site. The mitochondrial form is generated by removal of an N-terminal extension. The enzyme functions as a homotetramer and belongs to the thermostable class II fumarases. Mutations in this gene can cause fumarase deficiency, leading to progressive encephalopathy.
