Schistosoma japonicum glutathione S-transferase (GST) is a 26,000 Da enzyme that conjugates reduced glutathione to hydrophobic electrophiles.
GST serves as an ideal fusion partner for production of foreign proteins in expression systems due to its high expression levels in E. coli.
Fusion proteins can be purified in a single step because the GST portion binds tightly to immobilized glutathione, and elution is achieved using free glutathione.
The GST tag can be removed from the protein of interest using site-specific proteases.
Antibodies against GST are useful for detecting fusion proteins during purification and for confirming cleavage of GST from the target protein.
