Target Information
Adducins are heteromeric proteins composed of alpha, beta, and gamma subunits, encoded by distinct genes. They are membrane skeletal proteins involved in the assembly of the spectrin-actin network in erythrocytes and epithelial tissues.
- Alpha and gamma adducins are ubiquitously expressed, while beta adducin is mainly in brain and hematopoietic tissues.
- Adducins form heterodimers (alpha-beta or alpha-gamma).
- Each subunit has two domains: an N-terminal globular domain and a C-terminal domain containing phosphorylation sites for protein kinase C, calmodulin binding sites, and regions for spectrin-actin association.
- Alternative splicing of gamma adducin transcripts produces multiple isoforms with unknown functions.
- Polymorphisms in alpha and beta adducins are linked to blood pressure regulation in hypertension models.
