Ribosomes are organelles that catalyze protein synthesis, composed of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit, containing 4 RNA species and ~80 distinct proteins.
The RPS15 gene encodes a ribosomal protein that is part of the 40S subunit and belongs to the S19P family.
It is located in the cytoplasm and has been found activated in various tumors, including insulinomas, esophageal cancers, and colon cancers.
As typical for ribosomal protein genes, multiple processed pseudogenes are dispersed through the genome.
Alternative splicing produces multiple transcript variants.
