Target Information
Glutathione plays a critical role in protecting cells from oxidative damage, detoxifying xenobiotics, and facilitating membrane transport. The GSS gene encodes an enzyme that functions as a homodimer to catalyze the ATP-dependent conversion of gamma-L-glutamyl-L-cysteine to glutathione, representing the second step in glutathione biosynthesis. Mutations in this gene cause glutathione synthetase deficiency.
