Target Information

Glutathione S-transferase M3 (brain), also known as GSTM3, is an enzyme encoded by the GSTM3 gene in humans. Cytosolic and membrane-bound forms of glutathione S-transferase are encoded by two distinct supergene families. Eight distinct classes of soluble cytoplasmic mammalian glutathione S-transferases have been identified: alpha, kappa, mu, omega, pi, sigma, theta, and zeta.
This gene encodes a mu class enzyme that functions in detoxification of electrophilic compounds, including carcinogens, therapeutic drugs, environmental toxins, and oxidative stress products, by conjugation with glutathione.
The mu class genes are organized in a cluster on chromosome 1p13.3 and are highly polymorphic, influencing susceptibility to toxins and drug efficacy. Mutations in this class have been associated with a slight increase in certain cancers due to environmental exposure.
