Target Information
CD1a is a non-polymorphic MHC Class I-related cell surface glycoprotein expressed in association with beta-2 microglobulin. It is found on cortical thymocytes, Langerhans cells, dendritic cells, certain T-cell leukemias, and other tissues.
The CD1 family mediates presentation of lipid and glycolipid antigens to T cells. The human genome contains five CD1 family genes (CD1a–e) clustered on chromosome 1, differing in localization and ligand specificity.
CD1a localizes to the plasma membrane and recycling vesicles of the early endocytic system. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been observed, but their biological validity remains undetermined.
