Target Information
CD1a is a non-polymorphic MHC Class I–related cell surface glycoprotein expressed in association with β2-microglobulin. It is found on cortical thymocytes, Langerhans cells, and interdigitating cells, as well as in certain T-cell malignancies and histiocytosis X.
CD1a mediates the presentation of lipid and glycolipid antigens to T cells. The human genome contains five CD1 family genes (CD1a, b, c, d, e) organized on chromosome 1, differing in localization and lipid ligand specificity. CD1a localizes to the plasma membrane and recycles through early endocytic vesicles. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been observed, though their biological significance remains undetermined.
