Target Information
CD1a is a non-polymorphic MHC Class I–related cell surface glycoprotein expressed in association with β2-microglobulin. It is found on cortical thymocytes, Langerhans cells, and interdigitating dendritic cells. CD1a is also expressed in certain T-cell malignancies and histiocytosis X.
Structurally related to MHC proteins, CD1a forms heterodimers with β2-microglobulin and mediates lipid and glycolipid antigen presentation to T cells.
The human genome contains five CD1 family genes (CD1a, b, c, d, e) located on chromosome 1. These family members differ in cellular localization and ligand specificity. CD1a localizes to the plasma membrane and early endocytic vesicles. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been observed, though their biological significance remains unclear.
