HFE2는 철 대사에 관여하며, hepcidin 발현 조절 혹은 hepcidin 수용체 역할을 할 수 있습니다.
이 유전자의 결함은 juvenile hemochromatosis (JH, hemochromatosis type 2A)의 원인이 되며,
이는 조기 발병형 상염색체 열성 질환으로 철 과부하에 의해 성선기능저하증, 간섬유화 또는 간경변, 심근병증 등이 30세 이전에 발생할 수 있습니다.
