Target Information
Mitochondrial creatine kinase (MtCK) is responsible for transferring high-energy phosphate from mitochondria to the cytosolic carrier, creatine. It belongs to the creatine kinase isoenzyme family and exists as two isoenzymes: sarcomeric MtCK and ubiquitous MtCK, encoded by separate genes. MtCK occurs as dimers and octamers, unlike the exclusively dimeric cytosolic isoenzymes. Overexpression of ubiquitous MtCK is observed in many malignant cancers with poor prognosis, potentially linked to high energy turnover and impaired apoptosis. Ubiquitous MtCK shares 80% homology with sarcomeric MtCK coding exons.
