Target Information
The GALE gene encodes UDP-galactose-4-epimerase, an enzyme that catalyzes two analogous epimerization reactions:
- UDP-glucose ↔ UDP-galactose
- UDP-N-acetylglucosamine ↔ UDP-N-acetylgalactosamine
This bifunctional enzyme is essential for glycoprotein and glycolipid synthesis. Mutations cause epimerase-deficiency galactosemia (galactosemia type 3), characterized by liver damage, cataracts, deafness, and mental retardation, with severity ranging from mild (peripheral form) to severe (generalized form). Multiple alternatively spliced transcripts encoding the same protein have been identified.
