Product Specific Information

This antibody reacts with vimentin, a 57 kDa intermediate filament intracellular protein expressed in a variety of mesenchymal and mesodermal cell types.

Immunocytochemistry staining technique:

  1. Fix cells for 10 min in methanol at -20°C and for 6 min in acetone at -20°C, or
  2. Fix cells directly in methanol for 10 min at -20°C, or in acetone for 10 min at -20°C.

Target Information

Vimentin is a developmentally regulated intermediate filament protein (IFP) found in cells of mesenchymal origin. It is involved in intracellular transport of proteins between the nucleus and plasma membrane.
Unlike other IFPs, vimentin is expressed along with desmin during early cellular development and later replaced by tissue-specific IFPs.
Vimentin also plays a role in steroid synthesis by acting as a storage network for cholesterol-containing lipid droplets.
Phosphorylation of vimentin by protein kinase leads to filament breakdown and cytoskeletal rearrangement, facilitating cholesterol transport to mitochondria and enhancing steroid synthesis.
