Specificity: Recognises human CD44 (Indian blood group).
Target Information
CD44 is a 100 kDa type 1 transmembrane glycoprotein widely expressed on human leukocytes, white matter of the brain, and epithelial cells of intestine and breast.
It serves as a receptor for hyaluronic acid (HA) and is involved in cell-cell interactions, adhesion, and migration.
CD44 plays roles in lymphocyte activation, recirculation, and homing, and may be upregulated in certain carcinomas, possibly linked to metastatic potential.
CD44 is expressed in hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic cells, epithelial tissues, and filopodia in cultured keratinocytes.
Bone marrow myeloid cells and memory T cells express CD44 at high levels, and peripheral B and T cells can upregulate CD44 expression upon stimulation.
Transcripts undergo complex alternative splicing, generating multiple isoforms with distinct functions.
Diseases associated with CD44 dysfunction include superficial keratitis and lichen sclerosus, and CD44 may be implicated in tumor metastasis formation.
