Target Information

This gene belongs to the septin family of nucleotide-binding proteins, originally described in yeast as cell division cycle regulatory proteins. Septins are highly conserved across species (yeast, Drosophila, mouse) and play roles in cytoskeletal organization.
Disruption of septin function affects cytokinesis, producing multinucleate or polyploid cells.
The SEPT5 gene is mapped to chromosome 22q11, a region associated with DiGeorge and velocardiofacial syndromes.
Translocation with the MLL gene has been reported in acute myeloid leukemia.
Two transcripts (2.2 kb major form, 3.5 kb minor form) are observed, differing by polyadenylation signal usage.
An alternatively spliced transcript variant with a different 5′ end has also been identified but not fully characterized.
